Tata Consumer Products is one of India’s leading companies in the FMCG market and is part of the Tata Group.
Bringing the group’s primary consumer product activities under one roof, it is abode to some renowned brands in India – including Tata Tea, Tata Salt, Tetley Tea, Kannan Devan, Chakra Gold, and Gemini. Some of the emerging brands include Tata Sampann and Himalayan.
Tata Consumer Products has a retail division, which includes cafés, in collaboration with Starbucks India.
Along with domestic market operations, it has a market presence in over 40 countries.
The journey of Tata Consumer Products began in 1964 when Tata Group and James Finlay, a major Indian tea company, collaborated to establish Tata Finlay Limited.
With the creation of Tata Tea as a brand in 1991, Tata Group made its first venture into consumer branding.
Later acquisitions included Tetley Tea in 2000, Good Earth in 2005, and Eight O’Clock Coffee in 2006. Tata Tea purchased Himalayan Water as well as the Polish businesses Vitax and Flosana in 2007.
In 2010, the company was renamed Tata Global Beverages (TGBL), and in 2011, it created NourishCo with PepsiCo India.
Its partnership with Starbucks Corporation brought Starbucks to India in 2012.
In 2015, TGBL introduced the Tata Sampann food brand.
In 2019, ,Tata Chemicals announced the de-merger of its consumer products business. This was merged into Tata Global Beverages and the new company was called ‘Tata Consumer Products’.
Expanding its business sphere, it purchased Kottaram Agro Foods and Tata SmartFoodz Limited in 2021 and marked its entry into the ready-to-eat segment.
The company’s growth strategy is two-pronged:
- Emphasising new production engines like Tata Sampann, NourishCo, and Tata Soulfull
- Swiftly expanding its distribution network and supply chain, which will fuel the next phase of economic expansion.
