Maruti Suzuki is an Indian subsidiary of Japanese car manufacturer – Suzuki Motor. The company is a household name in the country. When Indians go out to buy their first car, more often than not, it is a Maruti.
Maruti Udyog Limited (old name) was founded as a joint venture by the government of India and Japan’s Suzuki. The main mission behind this was to provide cars for every middle class family in India.
Maruti started its production in 1983. The first car they launched was the iconic Maruti 800. The car was sold at a reasonable price and went on to become the most sold car in the country. Even now, you can find Maruti 800 cars on the road.
In 2003, Maruti went public and was listed on BSE and NSE.
Some of their popular cars are Alto, Swift, WagonR, Dzire, SX4, Grand Vitara, Brezza and more.
Even after nearly 4 decades of doing business in India, Maruti remains the market leader. The company’s market share which was above 50% for more than a couple of decades. It now hovers around the 40-45% mark.
People still prefer Maruti over other car brands due to the trust factor, which includes affordable parts and after-sales service.
Maruti has several new cars in the pipeline. They have gone big on hybrid cars and should eventually start mass-producing electric cars.
