KRBL is India’s leading producer of basmati rice. The company is recognized for its popular brand ‘India Gate’ which is considered to be the No 1 basmati rice brand in the world.
Apart from ‘India Gate’, KRBL also has 13 other brands including Taj Mahal, Doon, Bemisal, Nur Jahan and others.
The company has country-wide network of dealers, distributors and retail outlets. KRBL also exports basmati rice products to more than 90 countries.
Other than India, KRBL has a strong presence the Middle East – which accounts for more than 65% revenue from exports.
The share price of KRBL has been a story of several booms and busts. When it rises, it goes up several times and when it falls, it crashes.
During the 2004-2007 bull market, the KRBL stock price rallied more than 1300% – only to crash nearly 80% in the next 3 years.
The next year and a half were witness to the share rising 10x once again – before falling 75% from the highs.
Then came the biggest rally of them all. During an extended rally between August 2013 to October 2017 – the KRBL share price went up more than 30 times.
Anyone who invested during this period made big money – as it was also the time when several well known PMS (Portfolio Management Services) fund managers entered the stock and spoke about it on news channels and social media. Porinju Veliyath was one of them.
For a company with an average historical PE (price to earning) of around 12-13, KRBL was quoting a PE of 35 in 2016.
And like it always happens, when a stock trades at such high valuations, especially those without strong revenue growth – the price comes crashing down.
This time, from the highs to its lows – KRBL crashed more than 85%. And although it has recovered from the lows, KRBL didn’t participate in the 2023 small and mid cap rally.
Even though KRBL is a highly profitable company and commands a market capitalisation of more than 8000 crore ($1 billion) – Domestic institutional investors (mutual funds and others) have avoided the company. The foreign institutional investors (FII) have also never really shown interest.
Will this change in the future?
