Axis Bank is India’s third largest private sector bank and like most other successful companies – Axis too has a glorious story to tell.

A joint venture between the Administrator of Unit Trust of India (UTI), Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), General Insurance Corporation, National Insurance Company, The New India Assurance Company, United India Insurance Company, and The Oriental Insurance Company led to a new Banking company.

“UTI Bank” was born in December 1993.

The first branch of UTI was inaugurated on 2nd April 1994 by then Finance Minister of India, Manmohan Singh.

Seven years later, a big decision was to be made. Global Trust Bank (GTB) made an offer of a merger with UTI Bank. UTI happily accepted and approvals were withheld by the Reserve Bank of India. RBI declined the merger and put GTB under moratorium.

The following year, UTI Bank was listed under and London Stock Exchange.

In the next 2 years, they inaugurated branches in Singapore, China, Dubai, and Hong Kong. The initial footsteps in the international circuit were taken and growth was foreseen.

In 2007, UTI Bank was rebranded as what we know today as Axis Bank. The journey since then has been tremendous.

Once the rebranding was made, Shikha Sharma was handed over the MD & CEO positions. Under her supervision, Axis acquired Enam Securities and its compounded annual net growth rate was over 20% in 3 consecutive years from 2011-12 to 2014-15. The non-performing asset ratio was 1.34% in comparison to an industry standard of 4.4%. Along with this, the bank continued its international expansion.

Under Sharma’s leadership, Axis Bank was awarded “Bank of the Year” in 2014 by The Banker magazine, Financial Times, and many more feathers to her armor.

Later, in 2019, Amitabh Chaudhry took over as MD & CEO.

In 2023, Axis Bank completely merged with Citi Bank expanding their portfolio.

Axis Bank began its trading journey in the stock market in 1998 on the Bombay Stock Exchange. It has gone up nearly 300 times since then. There were many ups and downs through the journey, but Axis has survived the downcyles and thrived when the going was good.

Currently, Axis Bank has a network of about 4,900+ branches and about 16,000+ ATM machines across the globe. Amitabh Chaudhry, in the financial statement, said “We are now consistently surpassing our GPS aspirational target of 18% ROE and have fundamentally improved net interest margins to deliver earnings that are more predictable and consistent. By successfully completing the acquisition of Citibank’s India Consumer Business, we have achieved a new landmark in the Indian banking industry. This provides us an opportunity to further accelerate our retail business growth while strengthening our positioning across key business segments. In the last three years, our IT team strength has more than doubled with over a 2.5x increase in total technology spends, as we continue to focus on building critical capabilities and best-inclass resilience across our business operations. In the last four years, we have transformed the Bank to a stronger, more consistent, and sustainable franchise.”
