Asian Paints is the largest Paints company in India, both in market share and market capitalization.
A company started by four Gujarati friends in a garage in Gaiwadi Girgaon, Mumbai in 1942, went on to become one of the most successful companies in India.
The share price of Asian Paints has had its share of ups and downs, but majorly the stock has been a steady compounder and massive wealth creator over the last few decades.
The biggest test for the company has been the last few years. A major player, cash-rich with a huge distribution-dealer network – Birla Opus – has entered the market.
The Aditya Birla group is ambitious about its paints business and has invested heavily in creating a new pan-India brand.
Some say, this is a Jio moment for the paint industry, while others call it a phase of uncertainty.
Year-on-year, Asian Paints had given positive returns to investors for 10 long years between 2012 to 2021. This streak was broken in 2022 with the impending announcement of Birla Opus raising questions on whether Asian Paints would be able to hold on to its market share and leadership.
Towards the end of 2024, Asian Paints, which had already consolidated for 4 long years in a range – broke below a major multi-year support on 11 November 2024.
The future looks uncertain and the next few years will be a test for one of India’s most iconic companies – as another strong players enters the industry with serious intentions of disrupting it. Will Birla Opus be able to be disrupt the industry? Or will Asian Paints manage to maintain its strong leadership in the paints segment?
It will also be interesting to see how the other segments like Sleek Kitchen, Bathsense and the other verticals of Asians Paints perform in the years to come.
