The year is 2004. Rana Kapoor and Ashok Kapoor have just founded YES Bank, driven by the vision to redefine the banking experience in India.

The formative years were a whirlwind. Yes Bank quickly carved out its niche by focusing on corporate banking.

The mid 2000’s witnessed Yes Bank’s Initial Public Offer (IPO). This was a significant milestone that signalled its entry into the league of private sector banks.

As the bank continued to grow, it had to deal with the intricacies of a rapidly evolving financial landscape. The global financial crisis of 2008 comes to mind, but Yes Bank was able to weather the storm.

Challenges, however, were part of the narrative.

2016 onwards, the tight monetary policy and the the impact of demonetisation, GST, RERA – pushed the economic growth down. The collapse of IL&F further created stress in the mid-corporate segment, leaving banks like Yes Bank vulnerable.

Yes Bank was mostly the lender to emerging and medium-small companies. These were the companies which were severely impacted.

After hitting highs of ₹ 275 per share in March 2019, the shares of Yes Bank began to collapse.

The leadership baton passed from Rana Kapoor to Ranvit Gill in 2019, marking a transition period for Yes Bank – but the damage had already been done.

In 2020, Yes Bank faced a period of turmoil, with a moratorium imposed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) due to concerns over financial health.

This episode forced the bank to re-evaluate itself and prompted a recalibration of the bank’s strategy.

Presently, Yes Bank is on a path of resurgence. It has shown positive trends in improving asset quality and financial performance.
