Union Bank of India is one of the leading public sector banks in India. The government of India holds more than 75% stake in the bank.
The bank has its headquarters in Mumbai, India. It was registered in November 11, 1919 – completing 100 years in the year 2019.
On the 1st of April, 2020, Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank were amalgamated into Union Bank of India.
Today, Union Bank has a network of 8500+ domestic branches, 10,000+ ATM’s, 76,700+ employees and 18,000+ BC points.
The bank has received several awards and recognition for its prowess in technology, digital banking, financial inclusion, MSME and development of human resources.
Union Bank of India’s initial public offer of Rs 288 crore, was conducted on August 20, 2002. The IPO was oversubscribed 4.5 times. The IPO price was set at ₹ 16 per share.
Returns for investors has been a mixed-bag. The 8 years after the IPO were great. From ₹ 16 per share, the stock hit an all-time-high of ₹ 426.95 in October 2010. This high has never been surpassed in the last 14 years.
In fact, the Union Bank stock price crashed nearly 95% – hitting a low of ₹ 22.65 per share in May 2020. Long term investors who bought the share during the IPO, were witness to the stock rise up 26 times and then go back to nearly its IPO price in a span of 18 years.
This goes to show that ‘buy and forget’ simply does not work and long-term investing also requires investors to analyse their portfolios from time to time. Those who bought when the stock was in a strong uptrend between 2003 – 2010, and did not sell, would have probably lost a lot of money by investing in the company.
The chart and numbers below tell the entire story. Lot of lessons for both investors and traders.
