Update June 2024: The Trent Share Price continues to scale new heights mid way through 2024. After giving investors returns in excess of 125% in 2023, the shares of Trent have continued to rise in favorable market conditions. The returns from the beginning of 2024 to June (mid year) is a whopping 76%.
Trent, a TATA company, has been one of the greatest wealth-creators in the last 15 years at the Indian stock market. ₹ 25,000 invested 15 years ago would be about ₹ 18 lakhs today (end of 2023). A mind-boggling CAGR of 33%.
The same investment of ₹ 25,000 in a bank deposit yielding 7% returns, would be valued at ₹ 70,000 today.
The difference is staggering. This is what makes investing in the stock market a life-changing experience for many.
Trent has always been a richly valued company, yet has gone on to create serious wealth for investors – once again debunking the myth that high price-to-earning (PE) cannot generate consistent returns.
The Trent Story: Back in the early 1950s, Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was concerned about the rise in beauty products being imported into the country. Indian women were buying these imported beauty products in big numbers.
He persuaded JRD Tata to manufacture them in India. A company named ‘Lakshmi’ was created as a subsidiary of Tata Oil Mills (TOMCO). The company was later renamed as ‘Lakmé’, which remains one of the biggest brands in modern India.
In 1993, TOMCO merged with global-giant Hindustan Unilever (HUL). In 1996, Lakmé formed a 50:50 joint venture with HUL.
In 1998, anticipating better opportunities in retailing business, Tata sold their remaining stake in ‘Lakme’ for 200 crore. The money made through this sale was used to create Trent (short form for Tata Retail Enterprise).
Shareholders of Lakmé were given shares of Trent. The chairman of Lakmé, Simone Tata, was assigned the task of leading Trent.
During the same time, India’s favourite female attire ‘salwar kameez’ was being set aside by young girls for the more trendy ‘kurti’.
Westside (225+ stores): The ‘kurti’ changed the Indian ready-made garment sector. Leading this fashion revolution was Trent’s first flagship retail store ‘Westside’.
Nearly 25 years since the first store in South Mumbai, Westside has over 200 stores across 90 cities and 22 labels all designed in-house. Apart from clothing, Westside also has presence in footwear, lingerie, perfumes, cosmetics, and home furniture.
Zudio (400+ stores): Until a few years ago, Zudio was struggling to be profitable. The leadership at Tata, however, has not only made Zudio a turnaround story, but the brand has raced past Westside to become the fastest growing retail business of Trent.
Catering to budget-conscious shoppers, Zudio offers affordable fashion for every Indian. The Zudio model of business has had a significant impact, as it has begun taking away the market share of unorganized clothing stores across the country.
Star (60+ stores): Trent ventured into the hypermarket business in 2004 with Star Bazaar. It now has 63 stores spread across 10 cities.
Trent also has other concepts like XC!TE, Misbu, Utsa, Massimo Dutti and Zara.
We do not give stock recommendations here, but Trent has historically been a fantastic buy-on-dips business.
