Coca Cola is the largest beverage manufacturer and distributor in the world.

Who would have imagined that a ‘nerve tonic’ would evolve into one of the world’s most recognizable brands: Coca Cola?

In 1886, Dr John Stith Pemberton, a local pharmacist produced a syrup which he accidently mixed with carbonated water. He later decided to sell this as a fountain drink instead of a syrup. It was sold for 5 cents a glass.

Before his death in 1888, Pemberton sold the formula to Asa Griggs Candler for $238.98 – who founded ‘The Coca Cola Company’ in 1892.

In 1893, Candler trademarked the brand and distributed the first dividends to the company’s shareholders. More than 10 years later, Coca Cola continues to consistently distribute dividends to its investors.

By the 1920s, Coca Cola had secured iconic status, sponsoring the Olympics and adorning lunchboxes across America.

Post-war, the company embraced globalization and diversified its portfolio with brands like Fanta and Minute Maid.

Today, Coca Cola remains a household name, with its drinks consumed over 2.2+ billion bottle every day – under 500+ brands, across 200+ countries

Arguably the most renowned investor in Coca Cola is Warren Buffett. His two famous quotes on the company were:

I really wish I had a twin, and that twin had eaten broccoli all his life.. I know I would have been happier and I think the odds are I would have lived longer. I think Coca-Cola is a marvelous product.

If you gave me $100 million and said take away the soft drink leadership of Coca-Cola in the world, I would give it back to you and say it can’t be done.

Coming to the Coca Cola stock price: Buffett has always said, Coca Cola is company to be held forever.

There have been dips and hiccups along the way.

  • The stock price fell more than 65% in the 1970s.
  • Only to go up in a straight line without too many major falls in the 80s and 90s.
  • The share price of Coca Cola gained more than 6600% in the 16 year period between 1982 to 1998.
  • The compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) was a whopping 30% plus from the bottom in 1982 to the highs in 1998.

With rising competition from other beverages, the current century has seen muted returns for shareholders. The highs of July 1998 was only surpassed in October 2014 – which was more than 16 years of no returns.
